Canopy Report Reveals Toll of Healthcare Workplace Violence
SHARE

Canopy, the category leader in connected safety platforms for U.S. health systems, today released its first edition of The Canopy Safety Report, an in-depth study revealing that repeated safety incidents are driving the healthcare worker burnout epidemic and threatening patient care across America.

The report found that more than one in four healthcare workers face safety incidents daily or weekly—a crisis that extends far beyond operational challenges. Nearly half of respondents have personally experienced threatening situations, and over one in five have been involved in incidents that escalated to violence. Canopy’s platform data mirrors these findings: for every 1,000 healthcare employees, organizations manage over 70 critical safety escalations monthly.

The Breaking Point: Safety Threatens Workforce Stability

Workplace violence in healthcare has reached a critical tipping point. More than half of survey respondents say safety concerns directly influence their organization’s nurse turnover rate, with one in five citing it as a top-three reason for departure. This reality is underscored by national projections showing 40% of nurses intend to leave the workforce by 2029.

The financial impact is staggering. With RN turnover costs averaging $61,110 per nurse and recruitment timelines extending nearly three months, this represents a serious financial liability for organizations that fail to act.

“Healthcare leaders are navigating unprecedented workforce challenges, and this report reveals that safety has become the make-or-break factor in retention,” said Shan Sinha, Co-founder and CEO of Canopy. “The opportunity is clear: organizations that focus on the critical moments before incidents escalate don’t just protect their people—they build psychological safety that drives measurable improvements in turnover, trust, and ultimately, patient outcomes. The best-performing systems are proving this works.”

Technology as Solution: Connected Safety Platforms Deliver Measurable Results

Healthcare systems implementing connected safety solutions are seeing compound returns through faster response times and reduced incident volumes. Organizations using these platforms report:

  • 20% reduction in response times on average over six months
  • Six-minute decrease in incident resolution year-over-year
  • Earlier intervention prevents escalation, reduces the severity and cost of incidents

The report demonstrates how integrated safety technology provides a dual solution: empowering staff with immediate de-escalation tools while protecting workers and the bottom line. By reducing the gap between incident and intervention, safety platforms create more stable environments that prioritize patient outcomes over personal defense.

Making Safety a Strategic Imperative

Leading healthcare systems featured in the report are proving that safety investments drive retention, operational efficiency, and financial performance:

  • University of Michigan Health-Sparrow achieved 95% voluntary adoption of wearable safety badges, with security responding in under 45 seconds during a violent encounter within the first 90 minutes of deployment
  • A major Northeast healthcare system saw a 30% reduction in violent incidents within six months, alongside a 50% increase in incident reporting—indicating staff felt safer documenting what was actually happening
  • Another major hospital implementing enhanced safety measures experienced a 15% annual decrease in turnover rates

“Our ability to show a strong safety record has really set us apart in recruitment,” noted a talent acquisition specialist at one participating hospital.

In 2026 and beyond, organizations that reframe safety as a strategic pillar—rather than a compliance requirement—will see those decisions reflected in stronger retention, more efficient operations, and improved patient outcomes.
