The Independent Study Also Shows Clinically Significant Mental Health Outcomes for Employees Using ComPsych Behavioral Health Resources

ComPsych® Corporation, the worldwide leader in organizational mental health, well-being, and absence management, today announced the results of a new Return on Investment (ROI) and Clinical Outcomes study conducted by the Integrated Benefits Institute (IBI). The independent analysis of ComPsych’s behavioral health services shows a projected annual ROI of 507% – or $6.07 returned for every $1 invested. Using de-identified program data from ComPsych in 2024 and 2025, IBI used pre- and post- measurements from validated clinical instruments including a measure of depression symptoms (PHQ-9) and measure of anxiety symptoms (GAD-7), for the analysis.

“We are thrilled but not surprised to see the impact of our programs for clients, with strong ROI for organizations and meaningful clinical outcomes for individual employees,” said ComPsych CEO Paul Posey. “With the largest network in the United States of more than 120,000 providers across the country, along with a model that prioritizes connecting members to the right care at the right time, it’s clear we’re making a difference.”

Strong Clinical Outcomes Drive Robust ROI

To evaluate the impact of ComPsych behavioral health services, thousands of de-identified member records were assessed by IBI. After applying rigorous methodologies to ensure appropriate representation across key demographics such as income and industry, IBI reviewed matched pre- and post-treatment data for members who engaged in counseling services during the study period. For those who began with a clinically significant assessment score on the PHQ-9 and/or GAD-7, the results demonstrated significant clinical impacts for ComPsych members:

  • 63% of members who engaged in services achieved reliable improvement in depression
  • 73% of members who engaged in services achieved reliable improvement for anxiety

In addition, the analysis also found significant improvements to productivity:

  • 76% of people who engaged in services showed reduced workplace absence
  • 47% showed reduced impairment at work

The projected annual return of 507% was driven by three key factors based on peer-reviewed, published data proving savings associated with: healthcare cost reduction via avoidance of ER visits, prescription costs, and lower fixed medical spend; disability cost avoidance through early treatment to prevent claims escalation; and productivity improvements that deliver more days at work and better focus.

“Every day we hear from IBI member companies that ROI is critical and that they need to ensure that programs are delivering anticipated results. We were pleased to partner with ComPsych on this important work,” said Jim Huffman, President and CEO of IBI.

Effective Clinical Relationships Drive Meaningful Outcomes for Employees

In addition to the clinical and economic impact for employers, the study showed ComPsych counseling services drive consistent, clinically meaningful results for employees through trusting relationships with counselors. These strong clinical results were achieved through consistently high counselor ratings. ComPsych’s clinical outcomes survey includes assessing the working alliance, designed to measure the quality of a therapeutic relationship between a clinician and client. ComPsych’s data showed that 90% of participants said they and their counselor trusted, respected, and appreciated each other. Additionally, more than eight in 10 (81%) said they believed therapy would help them accomplish their goals.

“The clinical outcomes for depression and anxiety are not small or incremental changes,” explained Dr. Jennifer Birdsall, Chief Clinical Officer of ComPsych. “They show genuine clinical improvement for employees who need it most. What’s most exciting to me about this analysis from IBI is that it’s focused specifically on our counseling services, which is only one part of our comprehensive model. Knowing that clients access more than counseling through our services, including well-being coaching, self-guided digital tools, and work-life services to assist with major life stressors such as caregiving, parenting, financial and legal support – tells me how much we are genuinely helping people across the care continuum to overcome challenges and thrive at work and in life.”
