Brake, a pioneering employee wellness solution dedicated to combating workplace isolation and burnout, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Shelly Dev as its new Chief Medical Officer.

Dr. Dev brings a wealth of experience from her distinguished medical career. Since 2006, she has served as a Staff Intensivist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, following her Internal Medicine residency and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Toronto. She further honed her expertise with a Fellowship in Multimedia Education at the New England Journal of Medicine.

In her role as Director of Education in the Department of Critical Care Medicine at Sunnybrook, Dr. Dev has been instrumental in advancing medical education. She also leads Mentorship and Wellness in the Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Toronto, underscoring her commitment to workplace mental health, resilience, and addressing burnout.

In over 400 talks given worldwide, Dr. Dev has been a passionate advocate for mental health awareness, drawing from her own experiences to spark open discussions on the harmful effects of unhealthy work environments. Her insights have been featured in prominent outlets, including CBC, The Globe and Mail, and CTV, notably during Bell Let’s Talk Day.

“With Dr. Dev’s deep understanding of mental health and resilience, Brake is doubling down on our commitment to evidence based motions to support employee wellness. Her expertise will be critical in developing strategies to tackle burnout and foster a sense of belonging,” said Brake CEO Josh Mal.

Regarding her excitement to join Brake, Dr. Dev shared: “The collegial friendships we cultivate serve as the most crucial bolsters in navigating the inevitably challenging moments we all face in the workplace. Where most contemporary innovation continues to keep us tethered to our screens and away from one another, Brake is daring to do the opposite by compelling us to recognize the healing and nurturing value of our connections with one another. It’s a message and mission that resonated deeply with me—that while work brings reward, it is in people that we find joy.”
