Interview with CMO, PrismHR – Scott Horn

HR technology

1. Tell us about your role in PrismHR?
As the CEO, I’m responsible for setting the vision and overall strategy for the business. On a daily basis, I lead and communicate with our phenomenal team that helps us deliver talent attraction solutions for leading organizations as best-in-class recruitment marketing agency.

2. Can you tell us about your role at PrismHR?
I recently joined PrismHR as chief marketing officer. In my role, I’m responsible for leading the team that markets our products to Human Resource Outsourcers (HROs), identifying strategies for our clients to be more successful with their small and medium-sized business (SMB) clients, and for identifying new markets for PrismHR and our services.

3. Can you tell us about your journey into this market?
I’m new to PrismHR and to the HRtech space. I’m really intrigued with HRtech and the impact it can have on helping SMBs grow and enabling their employees have a better work experience. The HRtech market is really only in its infancy, especially when it comes to the SMB arena.

4. Can you briefly describe what PrismHR is?
PrismHR is the leading provider of software for HROs. Our customers, including Professional Employer Organizations (PEOs) and Administrative Service Organizations (ASOs) use our software to deliver HR and payroll services to over 85,000 businesses with over 2 million worksite employees (WSEs) from the SMB realm. The PrismHR platform includes capabilities to support the entire employee experience — from hiring and employee onboarding to benefits enrollment and administration. There’s also an employee portal where employees can view, update and enroll in benefits offerings and get payroll information from any device, which really is a game changer for workers everywhere.

5. How do you think technology is transforming the HR Sector?
HRtech focused on the enterprise has really led the way in terms of advancements in the last few years, but the SMB space has lagged behind. For SMB’s, things like online benefits enrollment and administration were all paper-based, and technologies like talent management, which can speed the hiring, onboarding and management of employees were really non existent. Now, all that technology has been brought to the SMB level, and they’re able to make real gains in terms of accuracy of information, improved compliance, and faster hiring. SMB employees benefit, too, because they have access to a wider array of more affordable benefits than ever before, and they’re able to access personal data more quickly and easily than ever before.

6. While researching about PrismHR, we came across news about your partnership with Beam Dental. Can you please explain how this program is going to benefit customers of PrismHR?
Beam Dental is a real innovator and it’s a perfect example of the types of products and services we’re offering through our PrismHR Insurance Alliance partners, who offer A-rated ancillary insurance products such as voluntary life, critical illness, dental, and vision. The Alliance levels the playing field by giving our customers more buying power and access to unique products that give them a competitive advantage.

Beam offers customizable dental benefit plans that incorporate hygiene behavior into policy pricing. In a nutshell, Beam offers a subscription service that includes a Bluetooth-connected toothbrush and accessories, and premium discounts are awarded based on the brushing performance of the group at renewal. We’re constantly adding new partners with innovative solutions through both our Insurance Alliance and through PrismHR Marketplace that enables our HROs to extend their value to their SMB customers.

7. PrismHR has been in the HR sector for more than three decades. Can you point out some of the major contributions of PrismHR to HRtech Industry?
PrismHR started as an IT consulting company for HR providers and has evolved to be the leading software provider for HROs. Our software is the backbone for our customers’ service delivery, and we also offer lots of ancillary products and services through our Marketplace and our Insurance Alliance that enable our customers to offer .

We like to consider ourselves to be partners with our customers

and provide lots of educational and networking opportunities. Probably the biggest one is our yearly conference, PrismHR LIVE, which is the largest technology conference in the HRO industry and draws over 500+ attendees. This year it will be held in June in Boston.

8. What are the things you believe will 2019 in HRtech Industry?
I think HR experiences will become more personalized, both in terms of what each HRO can offer to their clients, as well as what the SMBs and their employers expect.
Talent management is another area I think will be big. Things like applicant tracking, employee onboarding, performance management will be instrumental tools as companies continue to source, hire and retain employees in this economy.

9. What is PrismHR’s vision for 2019?
We’re ramping up our own hiring this year and have several strategic initiatives we’re working on. First, we’re looking at ways that we can provide more value to our existing HRO customers. A great example would be the expansion of our Insurance Alliance and Marketplace programs. Second, we’re starting to look at new markets and ways we can expand the reach of our existing customers.

10. Can you tell us about your team and how it supports you?
Our team is growing quickly and everything we do centers around how to make our customers more successful. Many of our team members have direct experience working for an HRO or in the greater HR industry, which I believe helps us in understanding some of the unique challenges faced by our customers and makes us a more valued business partner.

11. Which movie inspires you a lot?
I’ve always loved The Godfather movies – particularly I and II. Yes, there’s crime and criminals but there’s a lot of insight about the challenges of managing organizations, keeping people motivated and how to balance work and personal goals. It’s an amazingly well told story and the visuals are stunning. I could watch it every day.

12. We have heard that you have a very joyful work culture, so can you share with us some of the fun pictures of your workplace?

13. Can you give us a glance of the applications you use on your phone?
Well of course there’s email/calendar (Outlook/Gmail). I’m also a big fan of Yelp and Opentable. And for managing our house we have Amazon Alexa, Nest and a new app I just installed to manage our garage doors wirelessly. We bought a house when we moved to Massachusetts so we’re figuring out the whole smart home thing.
